Westminster is a northern suburb of Perth within the City of Stirling, about 10 kilometres from the CBD. The suburb takes its name from Westminster Estate, an area subdivided before World War II along a limestone road called Westminster Boulevard. Residents lobbied the City of Stirling in 1994 to rename the southern portion of Balga as Westminster, formally recognising the estate’s historic name. The area was resumed by the State Housing Commission in the early 1950s to contribute to the development of the Mirrabooka Regional Centre, and Westminster was developed to capacity by 1970. The housing stock reflects that history: predominantly timber-framed homes built by the State Housing Commission, with brick dwellings constructed by private owners from the 1960s onwards and unit developments popular between 1960 and 1970. The eastern portion of the suburb carries more modern dwellings from the mid-1970s onward. Stirling Central shopping centre, in the suburb’s north-west, is the main retail hub.
