Kalamunda
Kalamunda is a historic hills town in the City of Kalamunda, around 24 kilometres east of Perth’s CBD on the Darling Scarp. The name combines two Noongar words: “cala” meaning home or settlement, and “mun-da” meaning forest or bush. The first permanent European settlers were Frederick and Elizabeth Stirk, who arrived in 1881 and built Stirk Cottage, now a museum and the oldest surviving house in what became Kalamunda. The town was formally declared in 1902, advertised as a “health resort” where city visitors could experience fresh air and natural surroundings. Kalamunda History Village, Western Australia’s largest open-air museum, sits on the historic Zig Zag railway line and preserves the original station buildings and platforms, now on the National Trust Heritage List. The Kalamunda Library houses what was the largest stained glass window in the Southern Hemisphere, created by the Kalamunda Stained Glass Group between 1987 and 1988. The northern terminus of the Bibbulmun Track, the 963-kilometre recreational walking trail, begins in Kalamunda. With homes that span from early settler-era cottages through to contemporary builds, bathroom conditions in Kalamunda vary widely.
