Maddington is a mixed-use suburb in the City of Gosnells, around 20 kilometres southeast of Perth’s CBD. The area was owned in the nineteenth century by John Randall Phillips, one of the wealthier colonists to arrive in Perth in the 1830s. Phillips named his property Maddington Park after a town in Wiltshire, England, and the land was subdivided seventy years later during the gold rush population boom. Market gardens, orchards, and poultry farming defined the district through much of the twentieth century, and in the 1950s and 1960s large tracts were converted to residential lots. Maddington railway station, dating from 1889, played a significant role in the suburb’s development as a transport hub and remains on the Armadale Line today. The Wilkinson Homestead, a heritage-listed property, reflects the district’s long farming history. Unusually, several vineyards and orchards from the agricultural era remain within the suburb today.
