Palmyra
Palmyra is a suburb in the City of Melville, around 9 kilometres south of Perth’s CBD. The suburb’s name, believed to be a play on the words “palm area,” was established when the Palmyra Estate was laid out in 1903, and most of the district developed between 1901 and 1919. The land had previously been covered in Zamia Palms, which were toxic to stock and had to be cleared before settlement could proceed. Palmyra Primary School opened in 1913, and Melville’s first private school, St Gerard’s, opened in Foss Street in 1925. The suburb is home to Fremantle Cemetery, a 46-hectare burial ground established in 1898 with over 40,000 burials and 60,000 cremations, including the final resting place of AC/DC singer Bon Scott. The Miller Bakehouse Museum, maintained by the Melville History Society, preserves the suburb’s early community history. The historic Palmyra Police Station on Harris Road, built in 1927 and decommissioned in 1963, is another heritage marker. With a housing stock dating predominantly from the early to mid-twentieth century, bathrooms in Palmyra homes often carry decades of grout staining and silicone deterioration from years of regular use. The Grout Guy services Palmyra with tile regrouting, leaking shower repair, silicone replacement, and tile and grout sealing. Fixed pricing. No tile removal.
