Southern River is a suburb in the City of Gosnells, about 21 kilometres south-east of the Perth CBD. The suburb was formally named in 2002 by the Western Australian Planning Commission as part of a broader suburb boundary reorganisation, and takes its name from the Canning River’s southern reaches that border the area. Before residential development took hold, Southern River was a rural locality used for egg production, horse breeding properties and boarding kennels, with some farms still involved in the breeding and trialling of pedigree dogs and greyhounds. The area has grown significantly in recent decades, and today Southern River is a predominantly residential suburb with modern streetscapes and a mix of families in recently built homes. The Southern River Shopping Centre on Bristle Avenue provides local retail. Bletchley Park Estate, Sutherlands Park and the Southern River Foreshore Reserve offer open space and recreational areas for residents. Tonkin Highway to the east and Ranford Road to the north provide the suburb’s main arterial connections. New homes in fast-growing suburbs like Southern River can still develop wet area problems.
