Subiaco
Subiaco is one of Perth’s most distinctive inner-western suburbs, sitting within the City of Subiaco about 3 kilometres from the CBD. Its history is unusual: the area was settled in 1851 by Benedictine monks from Subiaco, Italy, who named their new home after the Italian town associated with Saint Benedict. The suburb remained the monks’ domain until 1881, when the Perth-Fremantle railway was built through it and the gold rush of the 1890s drove rapid population growth. By 1897, Subiaco was proclaimed a municipality, and by 1906 over 4,500 street trees had been planted, giving the suburb the leafy character it still holds today. Rokeby Road is the suburb’s heart, running through a vibrant strip of boutique shops, galleries, European-style cafes and restaurants. The Regal Theatre, built in 1937 in the Art Deco style, is a significant architectural landmark. The clock tower war memorial at the corner of Rokeby and Hamersley Roads commemorates local soldiers lost in World War I. The suburb also hosted the former Subiaco Oval, once Western Australia’s largest stadium, and King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women. Heritage homes in Subiaco, including Victorian terraces and Federation bungalows, frequently carry original bathroom tiling with aged grout and failing silicone. The Grout Guy provides tile regrouting, leaking shower repairs, silicone replacement and tile and grout sealing across Subiaco. Complete regrouts include a 10-Year Waterproof Warranty.
