The Vines is a rural-residential suburb in Perth’s north-east, within the City of Swan about 33 kilometres from the CBD and 6 kilometres from Ellenbrook. The suburb takes its name from The Vines Resort and Country Club, which in turn was named after a former vineyard in the upper Swan Valley area. In 1829, the land that now forms The Vines was part of a large parcel known as Swan Location 1, and pioneer settler Henry Bull named his northern portion “Woburn Park.” A family called the Howarths ran a vineyard near Ellen Brook Drive for decades before eventually abandoning the property in the 1950s. The modern suburb began in 1987 when Japanese developer Sanwa Vines Pty Ltd purchased 1,200 hectares of greenfield land and worked with the State Government to develop what would become The Vines Resort and the first residential lots. The resort’s two 18-hole golf courses now traverse much of the suburb’s area, and road names throughout The Vines, including Chardonnay Drive, Bordeaux Lane and Muscat Terrace, maintain the viticultural theme.
