The suburb was named after Samuel Waterman Viveash, who arrived at the Swan River Colony in 1838 aboard the Britomart and took up land in the area during the 1840s. Residential development came much later, in 1967, when Midland Brick carried out subdivision and requested that the area be named after Viveash.
