Watermans Bay
Watermans Bay is a small, tightly held coastal suburb in the City of Stirling, about 16 kilometres north of the Perth CBD. It takes its name from Alfred Waterman, a fisherman who built the first house in the area, a cottage called “Zephyr,” in 1908. The land originally formed part of the Hamersley Estate, whose family arrived from Europe in 1837, and the Hamersleys built a summer home called “The Castle” just south of the suburb in 1865, drawing the Perth elite to the area for seasonal retreats. Many of the suburb’s street names honour the Hamersley family, including Ethel, Margaret, Mary, Ada and Elsie. Before European settlement, the area was a Noongar camping ground, valued for its fresh water and abundant bush tucker and seafood. In 1918 the area was first subdivided as the Mt Flora Estates, mostly limited to holiday shacks, and after World War II it developed rapidly into the established suburb it is today. The name was briefly changed to “Waterman” in 1962 for administrative reasons, but residents successfully lobbied to restore the original in 2003 with 491 households voting in support. Star Swamp Reserve, a 96-hectare bushland declared an A Class Reserve, occupies a large portion of the suburb. Watermans Bay is one of Perth’s most expensive northern suburbs.
