Wattle Grove is a semi-rural suburb in the Shire of Kalamunda, about 20 kilometres east of Perth’s CBD at the foot of the Darling Scarp. The suburb’s name is believed to come from either a local property established around 1920 or from the groves of wattle trees that lined Welshpool Road in the early 1900s, with European settlers describing the area as “where the groves of wattle are.” The land was first explored by colonial botanist Charles Fraser and Captain James Stirling in 1827, and the Beeloo Whadjuk people occupied the region for tens of thousands of years before that. Early use of the land was for forestry and orchards, and fruit growing continues in neighbouring suburbs today. Wattle Grove today is roughly two-thirds semi-rural and one-third suburban, with a mix of hobby farms, equestrian studs, horticultural nurseries, poultry farms and newer residential subdivisions. Hartfield Recreation Centre and Hartfield Park provide a hub for AFL, rugby league, soccer, cricket and tennis, alongside the Darling Range Horse and Pony Club and a golf course.
