Willagee
Willagee is a suburb in the City of Melville, about 10 kilometres south of Perth’s CBD. The name derives from Willagee Swamp, the Noongar name for a now-reclaimed wetland feature in the area. In Noongar tradition, Willagee held deep spiritual significance as the place of the emu, where they bred, and emus were a valued food source. Residential development began in 1951, with the suburb created primarily to house workers in the new industrial area being developed by the Fremantle City Council. In the early 1950s the State Housing Commission opened 1,400 housing sites, and 240 Austrian tradesmen were brought to the area to build prefabricated kit homes designed for working-class families. Many of the suburb’s streets are named after people who arrived on HMS Success in 1827, connecting Willagee’s naming conventions to Western Australia’s foundation history. The outdoor Garden Theatre on Archibald Street opened in December 1956 but closed by 1958-1959 as television took hold. George Humes Park, created in 1999, honours respected Noongar boxer George Humes (1936-1995). Ten parks and reserves are spread through the suburb. Willagee has evolved significantly in recent years from its working-class origins into a diverse and sought-after community. Older State Housing Commission homes with original bathroom fit-outs are common, and these frequently show deteriorated grout and failing silicone. The Grout Guy provides tile regrouting, leaking shower repairs, silicone replacement and tile and grout sealing. Complete regrouts include a 10-Year Waterproof Warranty. Book with The Grout Guy today.
