Woodbridge
Woodbridge is a suburb of Perth in the City of Swan, named after Governor James Stirling’s original 1829 land grant, which he named after his wife’s family property near Guildford in England. The suburb was formally gazetted on 1 March 2001. Its most significant landmark is Woodbridge House, a National Trust property on the edge of the Swan River. Charles Harper and Fanny de Burgh built the impressive home in 1885, designed by renowned architect Francis Bird, and it was vested in the National Trust in 1968, restored and opened to the public in 1970. The Woodbridge Hotel, built in 1902 near Woodbridge Railway Station, is another heritage landmark in the suburb. Governor Stirling Senior High School and Woodbridge Primary School serve the local community, and a shopping centre provides everyday retail. The suburb’s history around the first European settlers and the Railway Workshops contributes to a strong local heritage narrative. Woodbridge is predominantly residential, popular with families who want the Midland area’s services without Midland’s density. Homes in Woodbridge range from older established properties to newer residential builds, and wet area maintenance is a common need across the spectrum.
