North Coogee is a coastal suburb in the City of Cockburn, created on 19 December 2005 from portions of Hamilton Hill, Spearwood, and Coogee. The area had a long industrial history: from the late nineteenth century through to the 1990s it housed a coal-fired power station, railway marshalling yards, an abattoir, and skin drying sheds, before residential demand began transforming the foreshore from the 1980s onward. In 2008 the State Government launched a major coastal renewal project covering more than 85 hectares, with Port Coogee Marina at its heart. The marina development, one of Australia’s largest coastal renewal projects, created a new waterfront precinct with canal-front homes, cafes, boutique retail, and a sheltered harbour, housing approximately 10,000 residents. The suburb sits just 4 kilometres south of Fremantle and backs onto Beeliar Regional Park to the east.
