O’Connor is a predominantly industrial suburb in the City of Fremantle, named after Charles Yelverton O’Connor, one of Western Australia’s most celebrated and most tragic engineers. O’Connor served as Engineer in Chief and General Manager of Railways in the 1890s, responsible for the construction of Fremantle Harbour, Perth’s suburban railway, and the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme, which carried water 560 kilometres to Kalgoorlie. Publicly ridiculed by critics who claimed the pipeline would never work, O’Connor took his own life in 1902, months before the scheme’s successful completion. He is buried in Fremantle Cemetery. The suburb bearing his name was established in 1955, after an industrial zoning proposal was adopted in 1946 and industrial development commenced in 1949.
