Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island, known to the Whadjuk Noongar people as Wadjemup, meaning “place across the water where the spirits are,” is an island suburb 18 kilometres west of Fremantle, 19 square kilometres in area and the most visited day-trip destination in Western Australia. Human presence on the island has been recorded at least 17,000 years ago, and the island was connected to the mainland until rising sea levels separated it at the end of the last ice age. From 1838 to 1931, the Rottnest Island Aboriginal Establishment held almost 4,000 Aboriginal men and boys from across Western Australia, a history that continues to be acknowledged as central to understanding the island’s past. The island’s most iconic defensive structure, Oliver Hill Battery, was constructed in 1937 and features two 9.2-inch naval guns that remain the only intact emplacement of their kind in Australia. The Wadjemup Lighthouse, the first stone lighthouse built and lit in Western Australia, began construction in 1933. Today Rottnest is celebrated for its quokkas, its pristine bays, snorkelling on the Rottnest Island Marine Reserve, cycling, and its summer holiday atmosphere. For holiday accommodation and island properties, bathroom maintenance is as necessary here as anywhere in Western Australia, with salt air accelerating grout and silicone deterioration year-round. The Grout Guy services Rottnest Island with tile regrouting, leaking shower repair, silicone replacement, and tile and grout sealing. Fixed pricing. No tile removal. A 10-Year Waterproof Warranty on full regrouts. Contact The Grout Guy today for a Rottnest Island quote.
