St James is a residential suburb about 6 kilometres south-east of the Perth CBD, sitting within the Town of Victoria Park. The area has a longer history under the earlier name of Bentley Hill, after John Bentley, a Crimean War veteran who supervised convict road workers building the Albany Road in the 1860s. A large camp for those workers was established on what is now St James. Before World War II, most of the suburb was vacant bushland, but the post-war period brought significant public housing development by the State Housing Commission, with hundreds of blocks made available to returning war veterans.
