Success is a planned residential suburb in the City of Cockburn, about 22 kilometres south of Perth’s CBD. It was named after HMS Success, the ship commanded by Captain James Stirling when he explored the Swan River in 1827, an expedition that led directly to the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829. The land was originally used for market gardening after being opened for settlement in 1890, and urban residential development didn’t begin in earnest until the early 1990s when the Kwinana Freeway was extended to the area.
