The suburb was originally called Osborne but was renamed Swanbourne in 1921 after an ambulance was misdirected to the wrong suburb with serious consequences. The name references Swanbourne House in Buckinghamshire, the family seat of Thomas Fremantle, brother of Charles Fremantle, for whom the city of Fremantle was named.
