Upper Swan
Upper Swan is a semi-rural locality in Perth’s north-east, within the City of Swan, surrounded by the Swan River and Ellen Brook waterways on its eastern, southern and western boundaries. It sits at the northern end of the Swan Valley wine region, and the portion south of the Swan River contains several wineries and hobby farms that draw visitors from the city. Upper Swan holds significant archaeological importance: a 40,000-year-old artefact scatter identified during clay extraction in the 1980s on the river’s north bank is considered one of the most ancient Aboriginal discoveries in Australia. In 1829, the land was incorporated into several early grants, including “Ellen’s Brook” granted to George Leake and “Belvoir” to William Shaw, who named it after Belvoir Castle in his native Leicestershire. The Bureau of Meteorology operated a research station in Upper Swan from 1951 to 1998 for climate tracking. Ginger’s Roadhouse, on Great Northern Highway, has been in continuous operation since the 1950s and is part of the community’s fabric. Upper Swan is a quiet, semi-rural community with a population of around 550, and most properties are hobby farms or rural-residential blocks with established homes. Older properties in the area often show bathroom wear that has gone unaddressed. The Grout Guy provides tile regrouting, leaking shower repairs, silicone replacement and tile and grout sealing.
