Wanneroo is one of Perth’s oldest settled districts, with a name derived from Whadjuk Noongar words meaning “a place where women dig up roots.” The Whadjuk and Yued people moved through this coastal sandplain country for tens of thousands of years before European settlers arrived in 1838 and began taking up land grants for cattle grazing, market gardening and poultry farming. The township of Wanneroo established itself in the 1880s, and a Roads Board was formed in 1902.
