Wembley Downs is a leafy, hilly suburb in the City of Stirling, about 10 kilometres north-west of the Perth CBD. Part of the land was originally granted to Henry Trigg and Mary Ann Hokin in 1842, and later purchased by David Boyd around 1906. The suburb name derives from the local golf course, and was used informally by residents before being officially approved in 1959. Early development was slow due to the thick virgin bush and limestone outcrops, and by 1947 the Perth Road Board had to resume 600 blocks for unpaid rates. Growth accelerated through the 1950s and by the 1970s the suburb was almost completely built out. Hale School, a selective and private Anglican school for boys, is the suburb’s most significant institution and its largest employer after the army. Wembley Downs is genuinely beautiful, with numerous trees, undulating terrain and a settled, affluent character.
