Wilson
Wilson is a residential suburb in the City of Canning, on the north bank of the Canning River, about 8 kilometres from the Perth CBD. Originally known as Beeloo, the suburb was renamed Wilson in 1958 following a petition by local residents, honouring early landowner and nursery founder George Wilson. Much of Wilson’s residential development came between 1959 and 1964, when 600 homes were built, many of them State Housing Commission properties. Castledare, a heritage-listed site in the suburb, has a history going back to around 1907, when it was known as Balmoral. The Catholic Church purchased it in 1927 and it operated as a home and school for disadvantaged boys for decades before becoming an aged care facility. Kent Street Weir is one of the suburb’s most significant landmarks, with Wilson Park at the weir providing a popular riverside recreation area. The Canning River forms the suburb’s southern boundary, and the Lo Quay River Cafe draws visitors to the foreshore. Centenary Park, Sir Thomas Moore Park and Alderley Park provide open space within the suburb. Wilson is increasingly popular with Curtin University students and young families for its riverside character and inner-city proximity. Older homes from the 1960s and 1970s here often carry original bathroom tiling that has deteriorated over time. The Grout Guy services Wilson for tile regrouting, leaking shower repairs, silicone replacement and tile and grout sealing. Complete regrouts include a 10-Year Waterproof Warranty.
